Chickens, Ducks, and Quail to be Allowed in Marysville

Marysville’s city council approved an ordinance allowing residents to keep chickens, ducks, and quail in a 5-3 vote during a recent council meeting. The measure sets a limit of six female birds per household.

Permits, issued for single-family and duplex dwellings only, involve an initial habitat inspection and annual renewals. Coops must be in rear yards, at least 10 feet from property lines and 50 feet from neighboring structures.

The ordinance takes effect Tuesday, April 1st. An initial $60 annual permit fee is required, followed by an annual $30 renewal fee. Residents who own two or more contiguous acres may also keep up to two larger animals like horses or cattle.

City Administrator Josh Haverkamp advised interested residents to check permit requirements, which may include building permits depending on the coop. K-State Research and Extension provided guidance on bird care and habitat standards.
