Iron Horse Trail Along A&SV Railroad Nearing Completion

The Iron Horse Trail in Abilene is a unique “rails with trails” project being built alongside the active Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. Unlike most trails created from abandoned railroads, this 5.5-mile path connects Abilene to Enterprise and offers a safe, accessible outdoor space for walking, jogging, and biking.

Led by A&SV co-founder Joe Minick, construction began in July 2022 and has involved building bridges, grading land, and constructing a retaining wall for the final 400 feet. Funded by state and local grants and supported by volunteers, the trail is nearing completion.

Portions have already opened, with final touches including gazebos and a rail-side path ending at Bridge Street in Enterprise. A&SV President Ross Boelling envisions increased trail use, including train rides back to Abilene.

The project fulfills the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s mission of reimagining public space to encourage outdoor activity and community connectivity. Completion is expected this month.
