The Arts Council of Dickinson County is showcasing “Gordon Parks and Langston Hughes: Connected as Kansans,” an exhibit exploring the ties between Harlem Renaissance leader Langston Hughes and renowned photojournalist Gordon Parks.
Running until November 13th, the exhibit features a storyboard, Parks’ photos, and Hughes’ poetry, all on loan from the Gordon Parks Museum in Fort Scott, Kansas. Although both men achieved national fame, they share roots in Kansas: Parks was born in Fort Scott, and Hughes lived in Lawrence as a child.
The exhibit also includes a continuous screening of Parks’ 1969 film The Learning Tree, a coming-of-age story set in 1920s Kansas. The council will host a film showing and discussion on October 28th at 10:00 a.m.
This marks the exhibit’s first appearance west of Lawrence. Visitors can explore the exhibit Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
