The roar of engines and the excitement of discovery filled the air at the Cloud County Fairgrounds on May 2nd, as Concordia Elementary School first graders took part in Big Rigs and Career Picks — an interactive event designed to introduce young learners to the big machines that keep their community running.
The event gave students a hands-on opportunity to get up close with a wide variety of big rigs and service vehicles. From fire trucks and ambulances to utility trucks, police cars, and even construction equipment, students were able to explore the vehicles, meet the professionals who operate them, and learn about the important roles they play in the community.
Each station gave students a chance to ask questions, sit in the driver’s seat, and hear firsthand what it’s like to work in these essential careers. Beyond the excitement of honking horns and flashing lights, the event helped plant early seeds of career curiosity and civic understanding.
Big Rigs and Career Picks was made possible thanks to the support and participation of several local organizations and businesses. A huge thank you goes to the Concordia Fire Department, Concordia Ambulance, Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), City of Concordia, Budreau Muffler, Prairie Land Electric, PrairieLand Partners, and the Concordia Police Department for their time, vehicles, and enthusiastic engagement with the students.
Events like this remind us of all, that career awareness can begin early — and with the right experiences, kids can start to dream big while learning how their community works, one rig at a time.
