The Museum of Art + Light (MoA+L) proudly presents two groundbreaking exhibitions honoring the remarkable career of American artist Dean Mitchell—a nationally recognized painter whose roots trace back to the Midwest in Heritage & the Human Condition and The Erosion of Time, an immersive experience showcased alongside digital artist Des Lucréce marking a dual milestone: Mitchell’s first-ever retrospective and immersive exhibition debut, celebrating a lifetime of artistic mastery and cultural impact.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and classically trained at the Columbus College of Art and Design, Mitchell launched his artistic path in Kansas City as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards. His rise to prominence is rooted in discipline, reflection, and a nuanced view of identity shaped by growing up Black in the segregated South and navigating the art world as a man of color.

His visual storytelling reveals a deep empathy for everyday people and overlooked communities. With poetic sensitivity, Mitchell captures not just faces and places, but entire histories laid with meaning, longing, and strength. Subtly layered, Mitchell’s work is a deeply personal archive of the American experience reflecting his hopes for humanity and observations of the world around him—challenging the viewer to consider poignant cultural themes.
