Old spoons, forks and knives take on a new form in Jill Walker Hodson’s artwork. Hodson will be the featured artist Saturday, March 21, at the Lee Dam Center for Fine Art, 201 South 9th Street, Marysville.
The Marshall County Arts Cooperative will host Hodson for Senior Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the art center. The morning includes breakfast casseroles, biscuits and gravy and breakfast sweets, along with time to visit and view Hodson’s work. Hodson will give a short presentation at 9 a.m.
Senior Saturday is designed for those aged 55 and older.
An artist reception will follow from 10 a.m. to noon.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Hodson creates art from vintage silverware, giving old pieces a second life as jewelry and other wearable works. Her interest in the medium began after she saw spoons stamped with humorous sayings.
“I first saw stamping letters on spoons with ‘snarky’ comments, so I figured I would try it,” Hodson said. “I love getting laughs from people as they peruse my booth.”
When she looks at an old piece of silverware, Hodson said the design and craftsmanship often guide what it will become.
“I see the design first and the beautiful craftsmanship that went into the original piece and then make it into something we can wear in everyday life,” she said.
That process of reworking old pieces is part of what she enjoys most.
“I love the fact that I can take something that has been hidden away in a closet or drawer and bring it back to life where no one would even imagine it might be 100 years old or older,” Hodson said.
Her work also leaves room for surprise.
“I like the time where I can jam out ’80s music in my shop and just let the metal and flames take on a life of its own,” Hodson said. “It always surprises me by what happens.”
Hodson lives in Marion, Kan. She is a 1985 graduate of Marysville High School and the daughter of David and Carolyn Walker.
Senior Saturday is a regular Marshall County Arts Cooperative program that combines breakfast, fellowship and an opportunity to hear directly from a featured artist. The artist reception that follows gives people additional time to visit with the artist, interact with her work and continue the conversation in an informal setting.
