Junction City to Honor Military with ‘Armed Forces Day’ Celebration on May 17th

The Junction City/Geary County Military Affairs Council (MAC) will host its 2nd annual ‘Armed Forces Day’ celebration on Saturday, May 17th in downtown Junction City. This all-day celebration, running from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is free and open to everyone.

Rob Wilson, MAC Director, said Armed Forces Day is a national celebration dating back to 1949. He said President Truman proclaimed the third Saturday of May as a national holiday to recognize and celebrate all branches of the military.

“Right around 1950, President Truman made Armed Forces Day an official holiday, so that’s very significant.”

“The reason why it’s important for this community is that it allows us to bring our service members that are stationed here at Fort Riley and all across the Flint Hills region into the community to kind of build a bond. We always try to strive to build relationships between our military and communities.”

“This is just one way to give back to our military and their family members, and just celebrate and have a good time.”

The day will be full of events for all ages. Beginning with opening remarks by Colonel Gerald A. Nunziato. Attendees can expect live music, military displays, bounce houses and activities for the kids, and more. Wilson said JC Mainstreet Market will also have additional vendors.

“We’re going to have veteran-owned businesses that are here within the community. The 1st Infantry Division Rock Band will be playing, this is the first time that’s happened.”

“Not only will we be able to celebrate the services on this day, but right next to it is the J.C. Main Street Market, which will have additional vendors and food trucks for people within the community to enjoy.”

During a previous MAC meeting, Major General Monte Rone announced that many Fort Riley soldiers will be deploying over the next 12 to 16 months. So, this is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognize these soldiers and their families before many head overseas.
