Riley County Community Corrections to Offer Protective Home Program Classes

Riley County Community Corrections

Riley County Community Corrections (RCCC) is offering a series of classes for new Protective Home Program participants. Space is available for classes scheduled April 9 and April 16. The program is hoping to add six additional families.

The Protective Home Program is unique to Riley County and provides temporary placement of children who are in Police Protective Custody (PPC) because of abuse and/or neglect. Protective Homes, on very short notice, take in and care for children for up to 72 hours.

To become a Protective Home, volunteers must complete a certification process that includes eight hours of training, a background check, and a home inspection. Anyone interested in participating should fill out the application online at https://www.rileycountyks.gov/protectivehome or contact Megan Lewis at (785) 565-6810.

“We’re incredibly proud of the families who open their homes and hearts to children in crisis. Their commitment ensures kids have a safe, caring place to land when they need it most, and that support is vital to the success of this program,” said Megan Lewis, Director of Riley County Community Corrections.

The Protective Home Program is made possible by support from local community organizations including the Daniel Keating Foundation, Westview Community Church, the Riley County Police Department, and Riley County Community Corrections.

Riley County Community Corrections provides a cost-effective means of promoting public safety through balancing offender accountability, supervision, and improving offenders’ ability to live productively and lawfully in their community.  The agency supervises adult and juvenile felony offenders placed on intensive supervision by the District Courts.
