Manhattan, Kan. — The Manhattan Fire Department will start its annual fire hydrant maintenance program this week. Crews will be flowing and painting fire hydrants throughout the City from now until late fall.
The fire hydrants are flowed every year to ensure their proper operation and to flush out the water lines. If you notice yellow- or rust-colored water in your home after crews have flowed fire hydrants in your area, run water in a bathtub or shower for a few minutes or until the water runs clear. If the water does not clear up, contact the City of Manhattan Customer Service Office at (785) 587-2480 or the Manhattan Fire Department at (785) 587-4502.
Please use caution when you are in the area where crews are flowing fire hydrants. Water flowing from the fire hydrants may be at a high enough pressure and volume to cause damage to vehicles if they are driven through the flowing water. Children should be instructed not to play in or ride bicycles through the flowing water. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Manhattan Fire Department at (785) 587-4502.
Report non-emergency issues easily by downloading the City’s Report It! app for Android or iPhone. Create an account and receive email updates as your requests are processed.
