Junction City Fire Department to Start Painting Hydrants Soon

Jason Lankas, JCFD Fire Chief

The Junction City Fire Department has finished with hydrant flushing for the year. We will now focus on painting the hydrants. Some of the hydrants have obstructions from shrubs, bushes, hanging tree limbs and landscaping etc. We would like property owners to help us with the obstructions around the hydrant. If this is not corrected the city will take action to correct it.

The fire department determines the color of the hydrant, and that the property owner may NOT paint the hydrant to a color of their choosing themselves.

Junction City Municode Article III. Section 700.305 states the following:

.Article III. – FIRE HYDRANTS

SECTION 700.305: OBSTRUCTION

No person shall obstruct, in any way, easy accessibility of a fire hydrant by placing material of any kind, fences or temporary structures, trenches or holes, making it dangerous to firefighters in connecting to the fire hydrant, or impair the accessibility of a fire hydrant in any way.

(Ord. No. G-1089, §1, 12-21-10)

2018 International Fire Code SECTION 507.5.5

Requires a 3-foot (914 mm) clear space around the circumference of fire hydrants to ensure easy hose connections and efficient use of tools like hydrant wrenches. This clear space must be maintained, except where otherwise approved or required.
