Abilene is home to two Gravel Kansas bike trails, offering bicycle enthusiasts two challenging rides that highlight Abilene’s history.
The ‘I like Ike Trail’ and the ‘Greyt Trail’ offer bicyclists two different historical rides through Dickinson County, celebrating Abilene’s rich history. Julie Roller-Weeks, Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau Director, spoke about the two trails.
“We have two different routes, an Eisenhower-themed route that’s 34 miles, which highlights different Eisenhower attractions, and gets you out in the country riding those gravel roads as well.”
“We also have one that’s themed around Greyhounds that talks about, you know, our Greyhound asset. It starts at the Greyhound Hall of Fame and ends at the track there.”
“Those are just two distinct stories that we have that we’re marketing under the map of this Gravel Kansas website.”
Bicyclists can find both routes on the Gravel Kansas website. The site breaks down the distance of each route, along with grades and waypoints, to help cyclists stay on course.
“People can go to the website; they can see the routes. They’re broken down by region all over the state. Then they also have them broken down by difficulty level.”
“If you’re a grueling gravel cyclist, the site tells you these are the toughest roads to ride. If you’re like me and want something a little simpler, you know, here’s the more amateur option.”
Riders can travel to gravelks.com to start their Abilene gravel adventure. Riders of the ‘I like Ike Trail’ will also go home with an ‘I like Ike’ button at the end of their ride.
