With the holidays approaching, the River Valley Extension District reminds residents not to become “drug dealers” to family or friends by sharing unused medications. More than 115 Americans die daily from opioid overdoses, making safe medication disposal more important than ever.

All four River Valley Extension District offices offer free medication disposal bags in various sizes to help safely eliminate expired or unused prescriptions. Disposal is simple: place medications in the pouch, add warm water, seal, shake, and throw it away.

By properly disposing of old medicines, residents can help reduce access to potentially harmful opioids and protect their communities. Stop by any River Valley Extension District office to pick up your free disposal bags and start cleaning out your medicine cabinet today.
