Washington Countywide Ambulance Services Postponed At Least Another Year

By: Ryan Duey

Washington County Commissioners are awaiting results from a delayed countywide ambulance feasibility study, initially expected in 3-4 months but now almost 11 months overdue. Preliminary estimates indicate a $1.3 million annual cost for the service. Due to the delay, next year’s budgets are set, postponing implementation for at least another year.

At a recent meeting, a small group and the commissioners discussed the study with Thomas Moore from Fitch and Associates, the consulting firm hired for $15,000 to provide cost estimates and options. Despite difficulties in communication with the firm, Moore promised a report within 10 days.

The county’s estimated cost of $150 per hour for staffing a countywide ambulance service exceeds $1 million, a figure higher than expected. Current local services, staffed largely by volunteers, operate at significantly lower costs but face challenges in recruitment and funding. The commissioners will revisit the matter once the final report is received.
