Lincoln Elementary School Setting Big Goals With the Marathon Club

Clay Center, KS- Lincoln Elementary School in Clay Center has surprised themselves once again.
They have a Marathon Club that was started by Kristin Wright, a former counselor at Lincoln Elementary School, started just about five years ago according to the Principal, Matt Weller.  And how he doesn’t know the exact miles that have been ran since the start, Weller says the children, pre-k through 3rd grade, and staff, can go on the track each school day and rack up the miles.

This year the students made a new record for the school with over 19,000 miles while the staff racked up a new record as well at over 9,700 miles.

Each student and staff member that completes at least 26.2 miles, the length of a full marathon, gets a t-shirt to commemorate their achievement in the Lincoln Elementary Marathon Club.

Weller says that during the school year, every Friday they would announce the newest members for the Marathon Club as well as recognizing the kids when they meet certain mile marks such as five miles, 10 miles, 15- and 20-mile marks, so they get to see their progress along the way.
Weller says that not only does it help the kids with a social aspect by getting to hang out with their friends, it gives them the opportunity to get the wiggles out before class starts. It also teaches the kids about creating and keeping healthy habits and setting healthy goals.
