Doris Darlene (Sloan) Alexander, age 90, entered into rest on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the Jewell County Hospital Assisted Living, Mankato, Kansas. She was born on October 15, 1932 in Jewell County, Kansas to Wiley Nelson Sloan and Vivian Mary (Kennedy) Sloan.
She went to Esbon Kansas schools from the 1st grade through High School and was a 1950 graduate of Esbon High School.
On January 14th 1951 she married Newell E. Alexander at the Burr Oak Methodist Church in Burr Oak, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2015. To this Union six children were born, Wade, Wesley, Wray, Denise, Wiley and Wynn.
Newell joined the US Army and left home and Doris went to work at the Jewell County Clerks office in Mankato for two years. Doris then worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for two years until quit dial in 1956. My mother ran for Jewell County Clerk of the District Court and won, I worked part time for her 2 or 3 days a week and also worked 6 winters months in the Jewell County Treasurer’s office for 2 years. I received a call from Robin Anderson asking if I would be interested in working at the Kansas Department of Transportation and I accepted. I interviewed and was hired starting as a office assistant II on April 18, 1967 and retired on February 17, 1995 with 28 years of work for K.D.O.T.
Doris enjoyed embroidering, quilting and made each grandchild a special quilt and gave it to them when they graduated high school. She also was big into genealogy with her sister Pat Czirr.
Doris was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, V.F.W. women’s Aux, D.A.R., and the Garden Club all of Mankato where she held various offices within each club.
She is survived by her four boys, Wade (Lynette), Wray, Wiley (Bert) and Wynn Alexander. 15 grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren, sister, Pat Czirr.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Newell, a son Wesley, a daughter, Denise Ann, brother-in-law, Alan Czirr.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 1-8 pm at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas. Family will receive friends from 5-7 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato, Kansas with Pastor Jim Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas.
