Obituary-Dwayne “Sonny” Roepke

Dwayne L. “Sonny” Roepke, age 82, of Waterville, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at the Blue Valley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Blue Rapids.

Sonny was born in Waterville, on August 21, 1941, and is the son of Lawrence E. and Edythe L. (Sperry) Roepke.  He graduated from Waterville High School in 1959.  After high school he enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard.  On October 16, 1961 he married Carlene J. Naylor from Greenleaf at the United Methodist Church in Waterville.    

Sonny was a farmer and a stockman all his life, raising hogs and cattle on his farm at Cottage Hill.  Some of Sonny’s hobbies were taking his 1957 Chevy BelAir to parades and car shows.   He also enjoyed collecting old John Deere tractors and taking them to parades with his great grandsons.  He always wanted to fly airplanes, however he decided flying remote control planes were a lot safer.

Survivors include Sonny’s wife Carlene, his daughters: Perri Hull of Blue Rapids, Sandy (Mike) Mann of Waterville, a sister Jean Roepke of Waterville, five grandchildren: Jami (Kevin) Wessel, Keri (Jeremy) Gardner, Brandi Hull, Casey (Dan) Mellstead, Macy (Ben) Ghalami, and five great grandchildren: Kinze, Lydia, Trevor, Danny and Mason.  Preceding Sonny in death were his parents, Lawrence and Edythe.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville.  Inurnment will follow at Cottage Hill Cemetery, south of Waterville.   Honorary Bearers include: Martin Merrill, Morris Merrill, Gene Harding, Jim Anderson and Denny King.  Military Honors will be provided by a detail from the Kansas Army National Guard.

Memorials are suggested to either: Meadowlark Hospice or Blue Valley Health Care and Rehabilitation, and may be sent in care of Christie-Anderes Funeral Home at PO Box 61, Waterville, Kansas 66548.
