Derek Schmidt: From Attorney General to Congressional Candidate

By Trish Svoboda

Derek Schmidt, the former Attorney General of Kansas, has officially registered as a candidate in the Republican primary for Kansas’ Second Congressional District. He expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from Kansans across the district since he announced his candidacy. He shared that Kansans have voiced their dissatisfaction with Washington and their longing for strong leadership and a representative who will uphold Kansas conservative principles. He affirmed his intention to fulfill these expectations as the forthcoming U.S. Congressman from Kansas’ Second District.

Derek Schmidt, a fifth-generation Kansan, served as Kansas Attorney General for 12 years, prosecuting criminals and protecting children and the elderly. He successfully represented Kansas in the U.S. Supreme Court and challenged the Obama and Biden Administrations. Previously, he served as a state senator for 10 years, leading the Senate Agriculture Committee and serving as Senate Majority Leader. Now a partner in a top law firm, he enjoys time on his farm and is a father to two daughters.
