Friendly Corners, a senior meal site in Washington, faces permanent closure this week unless at least two new full-time cooks are hired immediately. Meal recipients were notified last week, and Clifton’s meal site will continue temporarily, but it also risks closing without a new director.
The Washington site’s staffing crisis stems from the recent resignation of its head cook for family reasons, combined with the planned retirement of the director and the sudden departure of the last two cooks due to health and personal obligations.
The emergency situation was discussed on Monday by the board. The site, which used to have five employees—all in their 70s—is now down to one.
Friendly Corners prepares 50-60 carryout meals daily, serving Washington and surrounding communities. Without new staff, the long-standing service, vital to many seniors in the area, could permanently close.
Anyone interested in applying to be a cook should call Friendly Corners at (785) 325-3231 and leave a message.
