Harmful Algal Bloom Advisory Issued for Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area

KDHE

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory for Harmful Algal Mats (HAMs) at Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area in Riley and Wabaunsee counties. Unlike Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), which are microscopic algae dispersed in the water, HAMs grow on the bottom of waterbodies or other surfaces and can detach, washing ashore. Both can produce dangerous toxins.

HAMs often appear as dark green, blue-green, brown, or black mats and may persist year-round, even in clear-looking water. Health risks are greatest when mats are ingested or disturbed, posing particular danger to small children and pets. KDHE urges avoiding contact, preventing ingestion, and cleaning boats or equipment to avoid spreading algae.

Recreational users should follow posted HAM advisories and wash thoroughly after exposure. More details and an updated advisory list are available at www.kdhe.ks.gov/HAM.
