Concordia Police Department
All, feel free to release this information to the public. Unfortuenlty we are receiving a lot of calls of people that have been scammed. We will also be posting on our Facebook.
“Concordia Police Department has been contacted by local banks regarding a scam. The banks have stated their customers have been contacted by individuals who claim to be government agencies like the United States Justice Department and Homeland Security.
These individuals have stated that the customer’s identity has been stolen and used to commit “federal offenses”. They then produce fake documents stating that they are currently being investigated for illegal activity. While on the phone the individuals tell customers to stay on the phone and go to the bank and withdrawal large amounts of cash. While they are on the phone, they are advised that if they talk to anyone that works for the bank or they do not listen to instructions they will be in trouble legally.
Once they have the money, they are told to drive to different towns like Salina or Beatrice Nebraska, to deposit the money into a Bitcoin machine. Once the customer shows a receipt, they state the investigation will stop.
If you have received a phone call from someone stating they are from a government agency, please hang up and do not give any personal information. NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY WILL EVER ASK FOR MONEY OF THE PHONE OR USE BITCOIN. These scams are all very elaborate, but they are fake.
If you have any questions about a scam, please hang up, and contact our admin lines at 785-243-3131.”
