Abner Haynes, former AFL MVP and standout running back, died Thursday at 86. The Kansas City Chiefs announced his passing but did not provide details. Haynes, who died in Dallas, was a star for the Dallas Texans from 1960 to 1962 before the team became the Kansas City Chiefs.
He rushed for 3,814 yards and 39 touchdowns and caught 199 passes for 2,739 yards and 17 scores with the franchise. Haynes was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Honor in 1991. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt praised Haynes for his on-field success and community involvement.
Haynes also played for the Broncos, Dolphins, and Jets. He amassed 4,630 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns, with 3,535 receiving yards and 20 scores in his AFL career. A North Texas alumnus, Haynes was a trailblazer and an All-American in 1959.
