Johnson Shines as K-State Defeats West Virginia 45-18

By Jayson Henderson

Sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson threw for a career-high 298 yards and three touchdowns, leading No. 17 Kansas State to a 45-18 victory over West Virginia in Morgantown on Saturday. Johnson’s passing and two rushing touchdowns from DJ Giddens helped the Wildcats improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12.

Despite West Virginia’s focus on stopping Giddens, K-State’s offense found success through the air, gaining 412 total yards. The Wildcats outscored the Mountaineers 28-8 in the second half, with a key defensive contribution from Marques Sigle, who returned an interception for a touchdown.

K-State will now prepare to face Kansas next Saturday in the Dillon’s Sunflower Showdown in Manhattan.
