The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 26-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs featured a moment of confusion due to the NFL’s new kickoff rules. A kickoff from Jaguars kicker Cam Little bounced into the end zone and was retrieved by Chiefs returner Mecole Hardman, who took a knee. Initially ruled a touchback, the call was overturned after officials conferred, resulting in a safety for the Jaguars.
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson viewed the incident as a learning moment. “It’s definitely going to be on the coach’s video… a great way to learn that rule,” Pederson said. The officials, after reviewing the play, determined that the ball was live when Hardman re-entered the end zone.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid acknowledged the need for further clarification on the rule, stating, “We’ll get it cleaned up and see what they come up with.” The play contributed to the Jaguars taking a 20-10 lead before halftime.
