Last year Big Lakes Developmental Center, serving Riley, Geary, Pottawatomie, and Clay counties, celebrated its 50th Anniversary of service to adults with disabilities. This local non-profit organization opened its doors in the 1970s, providing adult training to those in need.
President and CEO Lori Feldkamp said they have grown substantially since their inception in 1973.
Big Lakes has two physical locations, one in Manhattan and one in Clay Center. Feldkamp said prior to 1973 State Institutions were the answer for adults with disabilities.
Penner and Emma Clements, Developmental and Marketing Specialist, said they are currently working on a campaign to help improve the facilities.
As a non-profit Big Lakes relies on the community to continue to grow and help citizens in need. Visit their website or Facebook Page for more information and to donate.
