City of Abilene to Bring 0.35% Sales Tax Increase to the Voters

By Ryan Duey

The City of Abilene is seeking voter approval for a sales tax to fund a new youth sports complex, following a feasibility and economic impact study conducted by Wichita State University in 2023.

The proposed complex would accommodate various sports including baseball, softball, men’s and coed slow pitch, and pickleball, along with necessary facilities. Results revealed strong community interest in sports, particularly baseball and football, and affirmed the complex’s operational, financial, and technical viability. Economic projections estimated an annual addition of $1,474,814.16 to the local economy.

The Abilene City Commission unanimously voted to place the issue on the August 6th ballot, where voters will decide on a 0.35% sales tax increase to generate $3.75 million over a decade for the project. For details on the sales tax vote visit the Abilene Civil Space Website.
