Technology is everywhere in our lives, from cars that alert us when we drift out of lanes to watches that track our biometrics. These innovations provide valuable information that enhances our safety and health.
Similarly, advancements in home technologies are improving efficiency, particularly in reducing water usage, according to Sedgwick County extension horticulture agent Matthew McKernan. He said, “There are a lot of water-saving technologies available to the public, such as high-efficiency washing machines and dishwashers.”
Another tip he advises is to install low-flow sinks and showerheads, and water-conserving toilets to further reduce water usage. He also said it’s important to repair any leaks in existing systems. When checking homes for leaks, he said it’s just as crucial to check irrigation systems. To save water outdoors, he notes that there are outdoor watering systems with sensors and smart irrigation controller technologies that help strategically use water.
“Oftentimes, municipalities will incentivize replacing these indoor and even outdoor water-saving technologies through rebate programs to help people conserve water to benefit the entire community,” McKernan said. He added, “Small changes in how we manage the water can lead to a big impact.”
