Historic Locomotive in Abilene could be State Symbol

By Ryan Duey

Kansas lawmakers have presented a bill to designate a 100-year-old historic steam locomotive to the list of State Symbols. The historic Santa Fe #3415 Pacific class 4-6-2 locomotive in question resides in Abilene, KS, and can be ridden down the Abilene & Smokey Valley Railroad during scheduled times.

Steven Smethers of the Abilene & Smokey Valley Railroad gives us a little history on the locomotive.

This locomotive is very unique to not just Abilene, but the state of Kansas.

Its uniqueness to Kansas and tourism makes it a perfect symbol for the state.

Keep an eye out for this year’s Abilene & Smokey Valley Railroad schedule for your chance to ride behind this historic locomotive.
