The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) at Kansas State University plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the state’s economy and animal health. Samples, ranging from cancer in cats to viruses in dogs, arrive day and night, emphasizing the urgency of accurate testing.

With over 500 types of tests conducted, the KSVDL supports veterinarians nationwide, addressing diseases that affect various animal species, from pets to livestock and even zoo animals. Besides routine testing, the lab surveils for potential outbreaks of foreign animal diseases, crucial for preserving the nation’s livestock industry.

The KSVDL’s growth reflects increased awareness of disease prevention, driven by both agricultural concerns and the growing importance of pets in families. Despite its extensive workload, the lab maintains rapid turnaround times and affordable testing fees, supported mainly through client charges. However, its reputation is built not just on testing capabilities but also on effective client communication, ensuring veterinarians receive expert guidance when needed.
