Unveiling Ceremony Honors Fifty Pottawatomie County Veterans at Memorial in Westmoreland

By Trish Svoboda

On Monday, March 4, 2024, at noon, the unveiling of a new plaque displaying the names of fifty Pottawatomie County Veterans will take place, as stated in a news release. The plaque will be affixed to the Pottawatomie County Veterans Memorial in Westmoreland, Kansas.

The Pottawatomie County Veterans Memorial, originally dedicated on May 30, 1992, was designed to honor citizens who served the country after December 31, 1946, while those who served before that date are recognized inside the county office building. In April 2023, a campaign commenced to collect the names of honorably discharged veterans residing in Pottawatomie County and who served in any U.S. Military branch after December 31, 1946, for inclusion on the memorial. By late December 2023, fifty names were gathered for addition to the memorial. A bronze plaque, ordered to accommodate the new additions, was cast at a foundry in Florida.

The newsletter stated that names of Pottawatomie veterans will continue to be collected, and another bronze plaque will be cast when they have fifty more names.
