OCCK Transportation has announced that 81 Connection, the regional fixed-route bus service for North Central Kansas, will be fare-free from March 3 to May 30, 2025, as part of a pilot program. This initiative, in partnership with the North Central Regional Planning Commission, aims to enhance transportation accessibility, community health, and mobility. By eliminating fare costs, the program seeks to remove financial barriers, allowing residents to reach essential services such as medical appointments, job interviews, and schools.
Trell Grinter, Director of Transportation for OCCK, Inc., described the decision as a “game-changer” for regional connectivity. OCCK will collect data during the pilot period to assess its success and consider future expansions.
The program is supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Thriving Communities Program, which connects the North Central Regional Planning Commission with technical assistance from Main Street America. This effort aligns with broader goals to strengthen rural communities through improved transportation.
OCCK, Inc. provides services for individuals with disabilities and the general public, offering programs like CityGo, KANcycle, KanConnect, and OCCK OnDemand. More information can be found at www.occk.com or by contacting the OCCK Transportation Center at 785-826-1583.
