UP RR Crossing on Buckeye in Abilene Closed Today to Repair Crossing Signal Arms

KDOT

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced it will temporarily close K-15 (N. Buckeye Avenue) at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing in Abilene.

The closure is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2025, beginning at approximately 7  a.m. and concluding by 3 p.m. the same day.

According to Union Pacific, the closure is necessary to complete emergency repairs to the crossing’s signal arms, which are currently malfunctioning during periods of rainfall.

Repairs are being made on an emergency basis to ensure public safety.

Barricades will be placed just north and south of the railroad tracks, allowing continued use of NW 2nd Street and Cottage Avenue for local traffic access.

While KDOT has proposed a regional detour utilizing K-4 (at Elmo), K-43 (to Hope), and Old Highway 40, this detour is intended for through traffic.

Local drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes using nearby city streets.

A map of the closure and traffic control plan is below and will be available online at https://www.abilenecityhall.com/DocumentCenter/View/5306/4302025-Road-Closure

Emergency services have been notified of the closure to ensure continued access and response coverage during the affected hours.

Questions may be directed to the City of Abilene Public Works Department at 785-263-3510.
