The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad is proud to introduce its newest addition: “IKE,” a restored Alco/GE 44-ton locomotive, built in 1940.
Originally purchased by the Arkansas Interurban line in Wichita, Kansas, the locomotive later served in the U.S. Army in San Bernardino, California, during the same era as General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s military leadership. After years of dormancy, the A&SV team, with help from Heritage Rail Management, confirmed it was still operational and began extensive renovations in 2024, including new wheels, a new engine, mechanical upgrades, and a fresh paint job.
On Sunday, this Eisenhower tribute engine—named #34 in honor of America’s 34th President—was officially christened by Mary Jean Eisenhower, Ike’s granddaughter, at the historic 1887 Rock Island Depot in Abilene. While a bit of finishing work remains, #34 is nearly ready to give faithful Alco #4 a well-earned rest.
