Washington County’s food pantry, Edith’s House, is facing urgent financial strain as rising grocery costs and increasing demand stretch resources thin. Director Jeanne Walker said 18 families sought help recently, depleting donations.
The pantry spends heavily on meat, providing ground beef and other items. The pantry did recently receive a $500 credit at Bob’s Locker to buy meat. Families also receive grocery vouchers for milk, bread, and eggs, costing the pantry $200 weekly. Overall, operating expenses average $1,000 per month, excluding donated goods.
In August, 47 families, including 67 children, were served, up from the 2024 average.
Needed items include canned vegetables, fruit, tuna, soups, cereal, ramen, and pork & beans. Donations of money, food, meat, or gift cards are accepted, with a drop box available at Kier’s Grocery.
