Manhattan Celebrates Juneteenth

In Manhattan, a historic celebration is underway as the community comes together to commemorate Juneteenth.

This three-day event began today and runs to the 17th and promises an array of exciting events.

Manhattan Juneteenth has been a part of this community since 1989. This celebration traces its roots back to 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, delivering the news that the war had ended and the enslaved were finally free.

Juneteenth serves as a vital reminder of African American freedom and achievement while promoting continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. It has evolved into a national and even global symbol of pride, honoring the events of 1865 in Texas and embracing our diverse society.
