The National Weather Service Office in Topeka has issued a Heat Advisory for North Central Kansas from 1:00 p.m. Monday (today) to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, July 27th. The heat index will range from 100 to 107 each afternoon this week.
Temperatures this high can be dangerous. It is important to drink enough water to prevent heat related illness, especially if you are going to be outside.
If you do work outside, it is important to pace yourself and if you begin to get overheated, stop and go to a cool, shaded area to rest. Wear loose, lightweight clothing if possible.
Certain groups are more at risk for heat-related illness than others. Some of these groups include:
– Infants and young children.
– People 65 years old and older.
– People who are certain medications, including anti-depressants.
Remember to never leave pets or children in a vehicle unattended. Signs of heat stroke can include throbbing headache, confusion, nausea, and more.
Heat stroke IS an emergency; call 911 if you or someone around you is experiencing it.
