May Is National Bike Month; Cloud County To Host Bike Rodeo

By Payton Tholstrup

May is National Bike Month and communities across the state of Kansas are celebrating. Created in 1956, National Bike Month aims to show the benefits of bicycling and hopes to encourage more people to give it a try. There are many ways you can participate in Bike Month, at the local, regional, and national level.

Below are some ways you can participate:

May 5th- National Ride a Bike Day. Everyone is encouraged to ride a bike on this day. Whether you’re heading to the grocery store, hanging out with family, or going to work, you can still participate.

May 8th – National Bike to School Day. This day invites participants to celebrate by commuting to school via bike and encourages school spirit.

May 17th – National Bike to Work Day. Did you know that 40% of all trips in the United States are less than two miles? This means riding a bicycle can be a feasible way to get around. Ride a bike to work and post a photo to social media, using the hashtag #kansasbikestowork2024.

Several communities in the listening area will be having bike rodeos to celebrate, including Concordia and Glasco. Participants need to bring their bikes or scooters and be ready to ride.

Bike helmets are available while supplies last. There will be a free bike drawing, prizes, games, and more. To register ahead of time or ask questions, call the Cloud County Health Department and ask for Katie. You can also register in person.

Concordia’s Bike Rodeo is Saturday, May 4th, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Concordia Broadway Plaza.

Glasco’s Bike Rodeo is on Saturday, May 11th from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
