The River Valley 4-H District will hold its annual District Club Day on Saturday, February 15th, at Clay Center Community High School. This is the first large event of the new year, bringing the entire District together to compete in various skills.

Melissa Baxter, 4-H Program Manager, said she refers to it as a talent show, with a wide variety of things the kids can do.

“Our kids can do various things including, normal public speaking, speeches, project talks, and demonstrations. But you know, if they’re in dance, or if they sing or play an instrument in band, they can do those things also, they can do poetry readings. We have some solo acting, and a lot of our clubs will do model meeting, which is where they’re judged on how well their Club runs a meeting. There’s just a wide variety of things the kids can do.”

Baxter said members aged 16 to 18 can do life skill competitions also, where members fill out a resume, application, and interview for a job. Helping to prepare them for the real world.

Baxter said top competitors will get to move on to compete at the Regional level.

“Any kiddo that has a top purple can go on to our Regional Club Day, which is also held in Clay Center at the high school. So, they’ll just re-give their speech, or their project talk, or demo, whatever event that they qualified with.”

“They’ll get to compete with kids from the region. Our District Club Days are just 4 counties. When we have a Regional that is 10 counties that will come to Clay Center and compete.”

Baxter said one other option the members can do is judging, with top members having an opportunity to judge at the State Fair. The public is welcome to show up, sit in, and see what Club Day is all about.
