Flu Cases Surge Amid Vaccine Fatigue, Experts Urge Immunization to Prevent Severe Outcomes

This flu season has been particularly severe, with around 33 million illnesses, 430,000 hospitalizations, and 19,000 deaths. According to Kelly Goode, Pharm D, one of the main reasons for the severity is that many people aren’t getting vaccinated. People have had so many vaccines to keep up with, they forget or don’t prioritize the flu shot, especially after COVID. As a result, flu rates have surged, making this season much worse than expected.

“People have had vaccine fatigue. They have so many vaccines to get, they forget, they don’t remember that they have to get the flu vaccine after COVID, and so we’re seeing a resurgence in the flu coming back really with a vengeance. So if you haven’t gotten the flu shot yet, you should really make plans to visit your doctor or pharmacist and get it as soon as possible. It helps build that community of immunity.”

The good news is it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Goode says though flu shots are typically associated with fall, the flu is still active and can last until early May. Flu vaccinations also play a vital role in reducing the potential for other serious complications from the flu. Those at high risk should get vaccinated.

“The people that are greatest risk are the elderly individuals with underlying health conditions and children. Everybody six months or older should have a flu vaccine during the influenza vaccine season. And the flu is really highly contagious, so these groups are very vulnerable. However, the more people that get vaccinated, it helps  some better protection. So if you’re over 50 or if you have chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or obesity, it’s really important for you to get your flu vaccine. And you can always talk with your doctor or pharmacist to find out which flu vaccine might be best for you.”

For those without insurance, Goode suggests reaching out to your local health department or health centers, and some pharmacies have programs available to assist in getting those who are uninsured vaccines. Goode also says FamilyDoctor.org is a great resource for information.
