National Nutrition Month Highlights How Food Connects Us Beyond Just Eating

Nutrition is about more than just the food we eat; it also includes the connections we make while eating, says Priscilla Brenes, a K-State Research and Extension specialist. Sharing meals with others creates bonds, whether by preparing food for someone or eating together.

In honor of National Nutrition Month, which is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this year’s theme is “Food Connects Us.” Brenes emphasizes that eating with family or friends fosters deeper connections compared to eating alone in front of the television. These connections can encourage mindful eating and open discussions about daily activities or personal goals.

Preparing meals together, especially with children, also strengthens these bonds and creates lasting memories. Brenes recalls family meals growing up, where conversations and teamwork helped build connections.

This month, Brenes encourages families to plan meals together and try new activities that highlight how food connects people. Ideas include picking a weekly recipe for the family to cook together or bringing a favorite fruit or vegetable to share in class.
