Wichita State University announced its Corbin Education Center, designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, which recognizes America’s most important historic and cultural sites.

The building, dedicated in 1964 and named for former University of Wichita President Harry F. Corbin, shows Wright’s style of blending architecture with nature. It now houses the College of Applied Studies, classrooms, and advising offices.

The nomination was led by Friends of Corbin, a local group formed in 2023 with alumni, faculty, and architects. They highlighted the building’s historical value, its unique design, and Wichita’s connection to Wright.

Originally planned in 1957 as the Juvenile Cultural Center, Corbin features open courtyards, bright interiors, and covered walkways. After a 2024 flood damaged the building, it has been restored, and classes will resume in January. Corbin is one of only two Wright-designed buildings in Kansas, along with the Allen House.
