At their May 19th meeting, the Board of Riley County Commissioners formally announced Jacob Hansen will serve as Interim County Counselor.
“We’re grateful to have someone with experience who is able to step into this important role,” said Commission Chair Greg McKinley. “Jacob has demonstrated a deep understanding of public service and a commitment to Riley County during his time as Deputy County Counselor. We appreciate his willingness to serve as Interim County Counselor.”
Jacob Hansen has served as Deputy County Counselor since September 2024 and will continue in that role while also serving as Interim County Counselor. The Board of County Commissioners is currently evaluating next steps to hire another attorney for the Counselor’s Office.
The County Counselor provides legal advice and direction to the Board of Commissioners and County Department Heads on all areas of county government. This leadership role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including drafting contracts, managing civil litigation, advising on human resources matters, and overseeing real estate tax foreclosures. The position plays a critical role in policy development, legal risk management, and upholding the integrity and effectiveness of county operations.
It’s important to note the County Counselor is not involved generally in criminal matters. County Attorney Barry Wilkerson’s office is responsible for criminal prosecution in Riley County.
Hansen has previous experience working as an attorney for the State of Kansas Department of Administration and Fortune 300 company J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. He grew up in the small town of Auburn, Kansas in Shawnee County and earned his Juris Doctorate from Washburn University School of Law.
“I am honored to be of service,” said Jacob Hansen, Interim County Counselor. “Local government has a very real and immediate impact on the community, and the work has been incredibly fulfilling.”
Hansen plans to remain in Manhattan, saying he loves the welcoming community and small-town vibe.
Hansen replaces Bryant Parker who previously held the role.
