The River Valley Extension District will hold a 4-week session for those suffering from type 2 diabetes and their support persons in Clay Center. Each class will take place at the Clay County Medical Center’s Education Center from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The four two-hour classes will run on consecutive Tuesdays on November 18th and 25th, and December 2nd and 9th. Kaitlin Moore, Nutrition, Food Safety, and Health Agent, will present a curriculum-based training on managing diabetes.
The curriculum, titled ‘Live in Control,’ will teach attendees about the seven pillars of diabetes self-care. Focusing on how to better manage one’s diabetes.
“We’ll go over the seven pillars of diabetes self-care, covering how to manage your diabetes at home best, but also be a better advocate for yourself.”
“You can have a large care team. So, we’ll talk about questions to ask at doctor’s appointments, and again, also how to best manage this chronic condition in between appointments.”
Moore said support persons are highly encouraged to attend as well.
“I think this class is good for newly diagnosed individuals, but also individuals who have been living with and managing the condition for a long time. I also think it would be good for people with pre-diabetes.”
“I would also like to say that support persons are highly encouraged to attend.”
“If you don’t have one, that’s okay. You can certainly still participate in the program, but we do encourage support persons to attend.”
Pre-registration is highly encouraged, and there is a small $15 or 2/$20 fee for the classes to help cover material costs. To register, contact the Clay Center Extension office at (785) 632-5335.
