Handgun Fired at Officers in Clay Center

Clay Center, KS-

On February 4th, 2023, at approximately 6:30am the 911 Dispatcher received a report that a man was shooting a firearm out of his front door in the 2200 block of Eisenhower Drive in Clay Center.

 

When law enforcement officers approached the residence a suspect fired a handgun at them from inside the house.

 

Several additional law enforcement officers from the Clay Center Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Department and the Kanas Highway Patrol responded.  At approximately 7:07am the suspect came out of the residence and was taken into custody.

 

Larry Ernsting, 75, was arrested for attempted second degree murder, and criminal discharge of a firearm.  Ernsting’s bond was set at $100,000.  As of Monday, February 6th, he is still in custody at the Clay County Jail.  Officers did not return fire, and nobody was injured during this incident.
