Abilene High School Students Isolate Their DNA

By Ryan Duey

Abilene High School’s advanced biology class recently learned how to isolate their own DNA. Shannon Heintz, Science Teacher, used a special kit for the lesson. Students then get to add their own DNA to a necklace to wear if they like.

Heintz says she wants students to understand DNA and DNA sequencing, and this makes it a little more fun.

This lesson is just an introduction to many more lessons in which students will get to dive deeper into molecular studies.

Heintz is using what she can at the high school level to go above and beyond, giving her students real-world experiences that can greatly help them when they reach college.
