HeadQuarters Kansas, which operates the statewide 988 suicide crisis call center, received resignations of its interim executive director, board chair, and several board members amidst accusations of mishandled grant funds and internal management issues.
The departures followed months of internal concerns about potential funding cuts from state and county sources. The organization’s leadership changes were caused by allegations including unauthorized bonuses and questionable expenditures, prompting internal investigations and calls for accountability. Despite the situation, operations such as call, text, and chat services remained uninterrupted.
The situation has raised fears of financial instability and the potential loss of critical funding for the 988 hotline.
