RCFD#1 Holding a Free Prescribed Fire & Controlled Burn Class

By Ryan Duey

Riley County Fire District #1 (RCFD#1) along with the Kansas Forest Service are pleased to announce a free Prescribed Fire & Controlled Burn class scheduled for Wednesday, February 28th. The class will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Pottorf Hall. Registration is NOT required.

The class aims to educate participants on the safe and effective use of fire as a land management tool. Much like a prescribed medication addresses specific medical issues, prescribed fire must be conducted in a controlled manner to maximize benefits and minimize risks. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge on utilizing prescribed fire and controlled burns responsibly.

Bryce Haverkamp, Northeast District Fire Management Officer with Kansas Forest Service, will lead the course. With 21 years of wildland firefighting experience and as a NWCG Type 4 Incident Commander, Haverkamp brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the course.
