A severe thunderstorm in Russell County, Kansas, claimed the life of one man and injured three others, as stated by Sheriff Andrew Van Der Wege in a news release.
The storm struck Lake Wilson in Wilson State Park, located in rural central Kansas, with winds reaching 68 to 70 miles per hour. The sheriff’s office received several 911 calls starting at 11:52 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers arrived to find numerous campers overturned.
During search and rescue operations, officers discovered three injured individuals and one deceased man. Christopher Montoya, 64, of Holyrood, was found in the Hell Creek Park area of the state park. His body was taken to the local mortuary, and an autopsy is scheduled.
The injured were transported to Russell Regional Hospital, but their conditions have not been disclosed.
